My name is
Jean McGavin, and I'm the founder of Journall.
I'm also a child of the American South. In the fourth grade, growing up in Virginia, my history book told me slaves had been happy living and working on plantations. That was the state's official version of the "truth," proving that a select few can distort our understanding of the past by implementing a specific narrative or agenda.
The value of multiple perspectives.
Later, in the eighth grade, my class was given a couple of dozen versions of the Battles of Lexington and Concord. Our assignment was to read these stories and piece together what happened. As a result, we learned history is open to interpretation. Many stories are needed to flesh out the truth, so we must always seek as much information as possible.
Those two important lessons have laid the groundwork for Journall:
- History can't be true when crucial voices are excluded.
- Multiple stories add clarity and truth to history.
One story, one vote, one picture, can change the world.
Now, imagine what many stories can do to change the historical record. Journall is driven by the power of storytelling, seeking to help us all understand one another and our collective story.
